The killing fields are one of three must-see sites in Cambodia, the others being Toul Sleng (S21) prison and of course, Angkor Wat.
The feeling as you enter this site and approach the memorial stupa is initially apprehension, giving way to horror and morbid fascination as you see the skulls then begin to read details and view the locations where things took place. Bone fragments and pieces of clothing are still visible in the surrounding fields, as excavation is nowhere near complete.
The weather during our visit was stormy and overcast, adding to the depression both of us started to feel as our site visit progressed. Detailed information on the site itself, pertaining to statistics, was fairly slim, however online research shows estimates run from 1.5 to 3 million people killed by the Pol Pot regime.
Regardless of the awful history behind this location (and country) we saw reminders that normal life goes on for the Cambodian people.
